Las Madres Vineyard, ‘Hulda Block’, Entav Clones 174 & 300

Wine Profile

Consistently express bright fruit, complex flavors, green and black olive and meaty undertones coupled with an excellent natural acid profile. Just a stunning site for classic cool climate Syrah!

Palate Impressions

Deep ruby color, almost translucent to the edge.  The outstanding nose has blackberries, black olives, charred meat, roasted herbs, white pepper, with some nutmeg and earthiness. Framed by fairly solid tannins and lively acidity, the mid palate shines with black cherry, savory notes, adding a nice sweet leather element the tail end. The long & highlighted finish is loaded with the hallmark black olive tapenade this vineyard is famous for. Cool climate Syrah at its finest.

Quivet Context

We first worked with Las Madres in 2004 and immediately knew the terroir, location and personality of the fruit were unmatched. Nestled in a small protected bowl where the vines capture the intense California sun, the Las Madres Vineyard is located a mile (as the crow flies) from Sonoma. The vineyard enjoys cool evening breezes from the San Pablo Bay and even ripening days of the moderate Carneros region. The vineyard has two clones, planted East to West orientation and divided into two blocks called Esther and Hulda. The fruit for our Quivet Syrah comes from the Hulda Block, allowing us full control over vineyard practices.
